Help Solve This Pickle Problem
Help find the real sour pickle!
Since posting this problem in June, we've had some excellent contibutions helping inch ever closer to finding the elusive sour pickle. First, let's update you on the original problem:
Dear Harry,
What has happened to the traditional New York Jewish sour pickle!? For many years now it has been impossible to locate! I've lived in New York all my life (I'm 39 and of the appropriate ethnicity) and know where to attempt to get REAL pickles. But they don't have them. They call them sour pickles, and they come in a barrel, but they are NOT the sour pickles of old. This is not just my imagination. My wife and several fat friends confirm this outrage. It must be some sort of dark conspiracy. Is the half-sour lobby so all powerful? Why hasn't the general media highlighted this blight upon our souls! I found your organization's page by looking for pickles recipes (formulas?). I obviously am desperate. Maybe the fine young people who make up your noble Society can help me. Please!
Dear Kingrock,
This problem has been overlooked for too long, and now it is time to solve what is becoming known as "Dillgate." It's high time we relocated the true sour dill, and I only hope that somebody out there knows exactly how we can. Pickle lovers...we need your help! Please send any information about the sour dill you may have to your good friend Harry Pickle at Harry@pickleking.com, so we can get to the bottom of this issue! Don't worry Kingrock, help is on the way!
Now let's get to the new clues:
Dear Harry,
The best place to find the true sour pickle is at the street fairs of New York City. Last time I was there I ate a few of these fine pickles, and then spent the remainder of the day doing nothing but drinking water. Boy were these pickles sour, but they sure tasted great! These are the true sour pickles, accept no imitations.
Dear Harry,
A local grocery chain within the past two years carred a brand of pickles from North Carolina. It was either Rainbo or Rainbow. It was an authentic sour sour pickle, - none of the lukewarm imitations which are now passed off as sour pickles. Unfortunately, the chain discontinued them and I have been unable to find them anywhere else in the city (Austin, TX). Their sweet pickle and pickle relish were also good. Good luck in your search, I will continue with mine.
Dear Harry,
Maybe this will help a little. Try and locate "Bubbies of San Francisco" brand pickles. They are as close to the real thing as I have found. They are made in Canada. The Bay Area address is Bubbies of San Francisco, P.O. Box 7326, Stockton, CA 95267. They are really wonderful. I have sat down and gone through an entire jar in one sitting. I have even gotten my gentile girlfriend to admit they are wonderful.
Dear Harry,
The only truly sour pickle available today is made by B&G and called (I think) "sour pickles." I don't know if they're the kind you're used to, but they really are sour. They also make a great item called "Hot Mixed Pickles".
Thanks to all those who are helping out! These clues are great! The sour pickle doesn't seem to be eluding us much at all anymore.
