Miss Liberty Takes a Bite
Everyone knows the Big Apple is home of the kosher dill pickle, not a
macintosh! The pride of Manhattan delis are the pickles they serve every day
to thousands of locals, professionals, and tourists. Why are they so adamant
about serving pickles with every order?
Robert Fine of the upper West Side's kosher deli restaurant, Fine & Shapiro
says, "You can't have one without the other! If we make a mistake and the
pickle is missing from the sandwich order, the customer will call up and we
have to send the pickle over fast!"
Katz Delicatessen, catering establishment, uses at least 60 bushels of
pickles a week accordingto Isidor Tarowsky. Pickles add excitement to the
meal. Owner Leo Steiner of Seventh Avenue's Carnegie Deli says, "Pickles are
to our cuisine what sauce is to French food. You wouldn't think of eating a
corned beef sandwich without a pickle, would you?"
