A Pickle Family Reunion

Once a year in Boston, sports and hot dogs come together for a festival celebrating their success and dependence on one another. Sports radio WEEI's Eddie Andleman brings you his annual Hot Dog Safari at Wonderland Greyhound Park. All you can eat hot dogs all day long in a fund raiser for Cystic Fibrosis and the Joey Fund.

And what, of course, goes perfectly with a delicious hot dog? The pickle, naturally. This year I, Harry Pickle, checked out the Hot Dog Safari as I always do. Little did I know of the suprise the Safari had in store for me!

I got there bright and early like a good pickle should, and was happily greeted by the sight of the Dailey Pickle Company setting up their booth. As we all know, it is no surprise to see pickles and hot dogs mingling together, so I decided to stop by the booth (which was fabulously decorated I might add!) to check out the progress of this pickle promotion.

At first I chatted with dedicated Dailey man George Salvitti (check out my interview with him) and munched on some delectable kosher dills. Suddenly, something caught my eye. There, peering around the corner of the booth, was my long-lost cousin Captain Pickle!

The Captain and I were close in our childhood, but he married a gorgeous gherkin in 1977 and we haven't spoken since. I was in a pickle (and I mean that in a good way, of course). It was great to see my cousin again!

We spent most of the day together, catching up things and reminiscing about old times. It seems the Captain hooked up with Dailey Pickle shortly after getting married, and has been happily employed since then. And who can blame him? Dailey Pickle is a fine, upstanding professional pickle producer.

Just like all good things, the day came quickly to an end, but not before the two of us enjoyed some great hot dog/pickle taste sensations. The Captain and I have since vowed to stay in touch, and he has even promised to take his family up for a visit to Pickle Preservation Society headquarters here in Ithaca. What a day!
