The Pickles Go to the Olympics
Well, I just got back from a cool pickle vacation to the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta. I figured it was a great opportunity for a guy like me, Harry Pickle, to hang out with 2 million people (like 25 more people than a P.P.S. meeting) and check out some cool sporting events. Plus, spread the pickle word everywhere.
I must say, however, I was shocked by the sheer lack of pickle presence at the Games and around the city of Atlanta. I did come across a cool children's book store in Marietta called Pickle's Place, but that wasn't in Atlanta. Happily, there were some people with the right idea, including Corky's Restaurant inside the House of Blues. There you could sit down and enjoy a big dill pickle, complete with blues music in the background. It's not as cool as ska, but it's still pretty cool.
There was one place with a pickle presence that just about made up for the overall lacking atmosphere.....Swatch. They had a display in Centennial Park that showed off all of their watches since production began in 1983. However, only one really caught my eye -- the Gu(h)rke. Yes folks, the Gur(h)rke, as it is named, was a spectacular part of a fall/winter Swatch collection in their art department. I'm not exactly sure of the year, but it may have been 1991. Reagrdless, the Gu(h)rke was the coolest watch I've ever seen. It boasted a pickle-style wrist strap and a dill slice for a watch face. What a watch!
Unfortunately they didn't have any for sale. So I'm still without a Gu(h)rke of my own. But I must have one! I'm determined to eventually have this watch in my possession, a simply genius design for telling time! I did get to do some interviews while roaming around. My interview with Izzy the Olympic Mascot took an interesting turn, and my chat with Charles Barkley's Mom was good dill fun. The Olympics was cool, but they should definitely have Pickle Ball as a medal event in 2000. I used to play that game in high school, and I think I've got the gherkin to make the team. Pickle Ball in 2000! We can only hope. Page design by Pickle King (rob@pickleking.com) Page Last modified on 8/02/99 |
